The Saltire Foundation is proud to announce itself as one of the sponsors of renowned Scottish explorer Mark Beaumont's latest adventures, the Atlantic Oddyssey. The Saltire Foundation logo is proudly donned on the Atlantic Oddyssey's boat, as it makes its way across the Atlantic Ocean in an attempt to break the Mid Atlantic rowing record in under 30 days.
The team are currently on day 10, a predicted third of the way through their adventure the aim of which is to become the first crew in history to break the sub-30 day barrier when rowing across the Atlantic; ocean rowing's very own four minute mile. The team will row in a 2hour on, 2hour off shift pattern for the duration of the entire expedition and in order to break the record they will have to maintain an average of around 3.9 knots regardless of what weather they may encounter. To keep their strength up they will be expected to consumer between 5,000 - 6,000 kcal everyday while expending somewhere close to 12,000kcal in a 24 hour period. Mark himself has stated that the row so far has been "the toughest expedition of his life" and as a self-confessed "land lover who never really rowed until 12 months ago", the initial stages of the journey have seen him suffer from bad sea sickness but things seem to be settling down as the row progresses.
In addition to now being our Patron and a full-time adventurer, Mark was also once a Saltire Scholar, completing a placement with Liberty Mutual in Boston, an experience which credits with giving him the ability to believe in himself to take on his expedition roles. Saltire Foundation CEO Sandy Kennedy said "Mark Beaumont is a fantastic role model not just to aspiring adventurers but to us all. He has determination, resilience and a relentless drive to push new boundaries and be the best in all he does. Yet he balances these attributes with a great humility and care for others."
"As a Saltire Scholar and our Patron, he shows clearly what can be achieved when you match great talent with the right opportunities. The Saltire Foundation is delighted to have played a small part and proud to be a sponsor of the Atlantic Odyssey."
