Prominent business figures from the Dundee area and Saltire Foundation supporters, Scholars and Fellows left dry land for the RRS Discovery in Dundee on 18th July. The topic of discussion was the 'State of the Newspaper Industry' and Chris van der Kuyl, CEO of The Saltire Foundation's host Brightsolid, kicked the evening off with talk on 'Unleashing the past of Newspapers'.
The evening's main speaker, Hugh Carnegy, Executive Editor of the Financial Times, spoke candidly about the challenges facing both his organisation and the Newspaper industry as a whole in a society increasingly reliant on new forms of media to provide news on demand. Mr. Carnegy was frank in his discussion of potential solutions to this problem and engaged the audience in a topical discussion on the future of print journalism.
The Discovery provided an incredible space for networking and 2010 Scholar, Chris Jones said: "it was fantastic see the interest shown towards the Saltire Scholars and Fellows by the prominent Dundonians in attendance". The State of the Newspaper Industry was first the Saltire Foundation has held in Dundee but its success is a clear demonstration of the strength of support for the Saltire Foundation's work across Scotland. CEO Sandy Kennedy says: "It was a terrific evening in a terrific venue. Thank you to Hugh Carnegy for an inspirational talk, emphasising the profound role good, positive journalism has in our society. Also, we hugely appreciate the support Chris van der Kuyl and Brightsolid have provided for the Saltire Foundation."
