Tell us a bit about yourself…
I have lived my whole life in and around the Stirling area and so it always made sense when I finally decided to go to University, after 5 years out, I would pick Stirling. I went to Alva Academy in the small Hillfoots village of Alva and after 6th year I had no idea what I wanted to do. After 5 years of working as a manager in fashion retail, I decided to apply for university to pursue a career in Human Resource Management looking to specialise in Learning and Development.
What did your internship involve?
My Saltire Internship took me to St. Petersburg in Florida to work for Electronics Design Company, Jabil. I was working for the Human Development team as an Instructional Designer and my job was to design the courses that the company used to train their staff all over the world. I was working on a new project called 'Boot camp' and the task was to revitalise the training throughout the company. I was working alongside top level management and directors', ensuring the correct information was used in the courses at all times. From day one I was given immediate responsibility on the project, working on my own initiative and working to tight deadlines. This gave me invaluable experience working on live projects, adding commercial value to the company from my very first day.
What has your Saltire experience meant to you?
The Saltire experience was life changing for me. I was offered a job before I left Florida to continue working for Jabil, but working from home in Scotland while I completed my degree. The Saltire Internship has given me the opportunity to prove myself and show my capabilities in a new environment and in a completely foreign environment and has given me the confidence to apply for graduate jobs and know that I would go into it with the same drive and ambition that I did with my Jabil internship.
What's next?
Completing my degree is the first thing on my list for the future and second is to secure a job in Learning and Development. I have always known since starting University that I wanted to do Learning and Development and my internship has given me the live business experience and confidence to get out there and achieve my overall goal. Whatever I chose to pursue in the future I will always be considering ways that I can give back to the Saltire Foundation for the opportunity they have given me.
Three words that would summarise your summer experience….
Unique, challenging, rewarding
