Annual Report

Businesses measure themselves on the bottom line. We measure ourselves on the impact we make. The SaltireFoundation is still young but its real impact will be felt in the next 4 or 5 years.

Nevertheless, in 2009/10 so far:

  • The number of Saltire Undergraduate Scholarships has increased from 6 in 2007 to 63 in 2010, selected from 334 written applications. Saltire Scholars will undertake internships with an outstanding group of businesses including IBM in China, RBS Securities in Japan, GSK Singapore, Wood Group in Houston and the Boston office of Liberty Mutual. Many describe it as a life changing experience.
  • At the UK wide 2010 NCWE Awards, the SaltireFoundation was Highly Commended in the Best Work Experience Provider category beating the likes of The Environment Agency and PricewaterhouseCoopers;
  • The first 14 Fellows completed the programme with 55 Scottish high growth companies competing to offer them projects.
  • On graduation in December 2009, 11 of the 14 Fellows had already secured positions of which 8 were with Scottish high growth companies and the 3 were in leadership roles in international businesses based in Scotland.
  • A £1m European HQ scheduled for Holland has opened in Glasgow thanks to the pivotal role played by Jim Duffy during his externship with Shawcor in 2009. Despite having no prior oil and gas experience, Jim now leads the new Shawcor team.

The SaltireFoundation is committed to measuring the impact it makes. In 2010, we will create an impact reporting system that is transparent and shows the "return on investment" for our supporters.

"The lack of talent, particularly around sales and marketing, in the Scottish business community has been widely recognised for some time now. The Saltire Fellowship aims to overcome this problem by investing in those individuals who have the ability to change the future of Scotland."
